A total of 16 commitments saw advancement while two were ultimately withdrawn. This has set a precedent for how effectively funding translates into measurable outcomes. The approach is straightforward: output must be demonstrable, or else the funds revert back to the treasury.

Throughout this period, tangible progress was made on 18 commitments funded by the treasury; with 16 achieving defined milestones. The two commitments that were withdrawn—Acropolis and tiered pricing—had their funds returned, ensuring transparency and accountability in the funding process.

Exciting Milestones in Cardano Adoption

One of the most promising initiatives was the introduction of USDCx on Cardano during Q1 2026. The asset’s launch came merely 84 days post-announcement, resulting in over 15 million USDCx minted in its inaugural week. During this time, the total value locked in Cardano’s decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem surged from $127 million to $142 million. Popular platforms like Minswap, Liqwid, and SundaeSwap actively supported the burgeoning liquidity pools.

Another key factor in Cardano’s rising adoption is its enhanced interoperability. Integrating with LayerZero, Cardano and Midnight collectively link to over 160 blockchains, overseeing more than $80 billion in omnichain assets. This milestone is touted as a groundbreaking interoperability advancement, particularly benefiting Midnight’s architecture focused on selective disclosure and zero-knowledge proofs.

Additionally, the report mentions several notable achievements in the wider Cardano landscape. Key highlights include the launch of Cardano futures by CME Group in February and Coinbase listing ADA as collateral for on-chain loans. Noteworthy, too, is the acceptance of ADA at 137 SPAR stores throughout Switzerland.

The engineering update shared by IO focused primarily on enhancing node reliability, security, and readiness for future upgrades. New versions of the Cardano node, 10.5.4 and 10.6.2, have been released, contributing to improvements in network connectivity and upcoming protocol versions like v11 and v12.

The KES agent also achieved its first stable version, enhancing the separation of cryptographic key management from the main node process, effectively lowering the risk of key-related attacks for stake pool operators. This improvement directly addresses the needs of Cardano’s expansive network of over 3,000 stake pools.

Another vital update was the UTXO HD, which transitioned the UTXO set from memory storage to disk, leading to a memory usage reduction of up to 80%. This significant change not only conserves memory resources but also lowers operational costs, making node management considerably less taxing on infrastructure.

Progress in Scalability Solutions: Mithril, Hydra, and Leios

The approach to scaling Cardano is categorized into three strategic tracks. Mithril has successfully launched its first stable version, marking significant progress towards decentralization by supporting a decentralized message queue protocol. This development leads Mithril closer to operating independently of a central coordinator.

Hydra has focused on production-related developments, with incremental releases from 1.0.0 to 1.3.0. Improvements in fast node restarts, chain synchronization, and deposit mechanisms highlight substantial progress, as well as the mention of Pondora’s Echo as the pioneering non-custodial Hydra implementation, alongside the VTech Hydra SDK.

Leios, aimed at enhancing Cardano’s base-layer throughput, has delivered its first working prototype. This prototype successfully generates and distributes endorser blocks within a localized multi-node network, facilitating large blocks with numerous transactions while allowing for simulated network delays.

Beyond scaling, IO continues to prioritize the development of robust tools for developers. Recent enhancements to Plutus include features from the Van Rossem hard fork, faster flat decoding, optimized byte-string-integer primitives, and an improved toolkit for Plinth. Cardano High Assurance has also opened early access for five companies exploring automated formal verification at the UPLC level.

Research remains an integral part of Cardano’s narrative. IO recently finalized Work Package 25 with all funding milestones achieved after extensive public engagement reaching over 24,000 individuals. Furthermore, two research papers were presented at the Financial Cryptography 2026 conference, and IO’s chief scientist, Professor Aggelos Kiayias, has been recognized as an ACM Fellow.

Looking to the future, IO has outlined several goals for Q2, including coordinating the protocol version 11 intra-era hard fork with Intersect, releasing node version 10.7, advancing Mithril to version 2608, introducing a public testnet for Leios, moving forward with Work Package 26, and hosting a workshop on Cryptographic Tools for the Blockchain at Eurocrypt 2026.

As of the latest trading activity, Cardano stands at $0.2491.

Recent reports indicate significant developments within the Cardano ecosystem, particularly regarding the utilization of treasury funds in Q4 2025 and Q1 2026.
