The cryptocurrency industry suffered significant losses in the third quarter of 2026, with reported attacks totaling approximately $1.18 billion<\/strong>. According to cybersecurity firm Hacken, a total of 107 security incidents were documented between July and September of this year.<\/p>\n

A striking 77% of the financial losses, amounting to $906 million<\/strong>, were attributed to vulnerabilities within external infrastructure. This includes compromised suppliers, insufficiently implemented security measures, and areas not covered by conventional smart contract audits.<\/p>\n

The report highlighted that the four largest security breaches accounted for about 80% of total losses. Notably:<\/p>\n

    <\/span>Frequent but Less Costly Attacks<\/span><\/h3>\n

    While smart contract attacks may not represent the highest financial losses, they were the most common, with 71 incidents recorded, resulting in losses totaling around $228 million<\/strong>. Among the 107 incidents reported, 98 involved losses of less than $10 million, with a median loss of $670,000<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    <\/span>Recovery Efforts and Ongoing Challenges<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Of the $1.18 billion lost, around $387 million<\/strong> has been recovered or reversed. In the Liquid Network breach, individuals identifying as white-hat traders returned $272 million. Similarly, in the Tectonic case, roughly $111.2 million was recovered after Cronos validators accessed the blockchain history.<\/p>\n

    Additionally, platform operators compensated users by covering $410 million<\/strong> from their own resources. Despite these recovery efforts, about $384 million<\/strong> remains unrecovered or uncompensated by companies involved.<\/p>\n
