Recognizing the potential threat, nine cryptocurrency firms have come together to form the Quantum Alliance. This coalition aims to establish standardized protocols that will prepare blockchain networks against future quantum attacks. Participating companies include Quantus, American Fortress, Intmax, Keystone, Midnight Foundation, Postquant Labs, Abelian, The Vault, and Hacken. Their mission is to facilitate a shift towards quantum-resistant technologies for prominent cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.<\/p>\n
According to estimates from the alliance, approximately 6.4 million Bitcoin\u2014about 30.2% of the total supply\u2014could be at risk due to vulnerabilities related to exposed public keys. Notably, this figure includes around 1.1 million BTC that may belong to Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.<\/p>\n
The potential risk arises from the prospect that powerful quantum computers could extract private keys from public keys, thereby allowing attackers to access and steal assets. Nevertheless, current quantum technology lacks the necessary power to breach Bitcoin’s cryptographic defenses at this time.<\/p>\n
Experts are divided on when quantum threats might become a reality. Richard Carback, Chief Technology Officer at Post-Quantum Labs, suggests that 2028 could be a feasible timeline for developing quantum risks. Conversely, Bryn Bennett, a director at The Vault, emphasizes the importance of creating a contingency framework for moving vulnerable assets should technological advancements occur more swiftly than anticipated.<\/p>\n
