Ethereum Foundation Launches Next Privacy Revolution Phase

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) has unveiled an innovative leadership framework for its privacy initiatives, transforming privacy from a series of disjointed efforts into a cohesive “Privacy @ EF” segment that strategically addresses real-world applications and actionable deployment.

Prioritizing Privacy in the Ethereum Ecosystem

In a recent communiqué dated October 1, titled “Privacy Cluster Leadership Announcement,” the EF stated its mission to “organize for scalability and effectiveness,” appointing renowned crypto advocate Igor Barinov as the Privacy @ EF coordinator, alongside Andy Guzman as the new chief of the Privacy & Scaling Explorations (PSE) team, taking over from Sam Richards. “Igor and Andy will synergize to ensure Ethereum’s privacy endeavors are meaningful, structured, and accountable,” the Foundation emphasized.

Ethereum Foundation Launches Next Privacy Revolution Phase

The announcement delineates EF’s privacy mission into three essential dimensions: “Private Reads,” “Private Writes,” and “Private Proving.” These facets are designed to directly correlate with both individual and organizational requirements. Private Reads focus on enabling secure and discrete querying and browsing; Private Writes are dedicated to safeguarding activities related to payments and governance; meanwhile, Private Proving aims to enhance the efficiency and portability of proofs, enhancing usability across diverse applications involving identities and data management.

The foundation connects these initiatives to the imperative of compliance and safety, highlighting their necessity for entities aiming to meet data protection norms, prevent metadata exposure, and safeguard personal financial details. The EF clarifies that privacy initiatives will now be integrated into the software development pipeline rather than treated as separate theoretical explorations.

“For Ethereum to establish itself as a cornerstone of civilizational infrastructure, privacy cannot remain a mere theoretical pursuit. It must be meticulously organized, supported, and implemented on a broad scale,” the announcement articulates—marking a decisive commitment to delivering tangible outcomes alongside theoretical advancements.

Concluding the announcement, the Foundation underscores its philosophy: “Privacy is a standard expectation, and Ethereum stands for privacy.” It extends an invitation for innovators to engage with Barinov and Guzman and to delve into a portfolio of “700+ projects” focused on on-chain privacy solutions.

Barinov brings a wealth of experience, having founded Blockscout and contributed to Gnosis Chain and zkBob, merging expertise in infrastructure, open-source contribution, and applied privacy. Guzman, who joined PSE/EF in 2022, transitions from a role in strategy and product management to leading operations for PSE, which encompasses applied cryptography, engineering, and research.

This clustered organizational model is intricately designed to merge ongoing advancements in privacy-preserving computations with Ethereum’s capacity for public verifiability. Although the announcement did not specify precise timelines or deliverables, the focus on making proofs “portable” and “usable,” alongside institutional compliance and minimizing metadata exposure, suggests a roadmap that goes beyond mere transaction confidentiality to encompass comprehensive user privacy experiences—identity verification, secure access, financial transactions, and governance—designed to align with Layer 1/Layer 2 architectures and emerging client-side proving strategies across the ecosystem.

At the time of reporting, ETH was trading at a notable $4,380.
