Ethereum Delays Glamsterdam Upgrade Over Security Issues

Ethereum Postpones Glamsterdam Upgrade Amid Security Risks

Ethereum developers have announced the postponement of the Glamsterdam upgrade, which was initially set to take place on October 26 on the Hoodi testnet. This decision stems from security concerns surrounding potential technical risks that might impact the functionality of smart contracts.

Ethereum Delays Glamsterdam Upgrade Over Security Issues

One of the primary issues involves alterations to how gas costs are calculated on the Ethereum network. Experts fear these changes could lead to unforeseen consequences for existing smart contracts. Specifically, there are worries about the error handling mechanisms, as they may function differently than they currently do, particularly if there are issues with gas fees running out.

A report by blockchain security firm ChainSecurity highlighted the risks associated with implementing concurrent Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), specifically EIP-8037 and EIP-8038. The company noted that integrating both proposals at the same time could alter the outcomes of error handling if gas resources were depleted during the interaction between smart contracts. This could lead to unexpected behavior from existing contracts under certain conditions.

To address these concerns, Ethereum developers have opted to revise the upgrade timeline, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of potential risks during the testnet phase. Currently, there is no new date announced for the rollout of Glamsterdam on the Hoodi test network.

The postponement does not equate to a cancellation of the upgrade; developers are focused on conducting thorough security assessments before proceeding with the rollout. In the Ethereum ecosystem, network upgrades are crucial for introducing new technical features while also ensuring compatibility with previously deployed smart contracts.

A revised schedule for the Glamsterdam upgrade will be shared following the completion of these security reviews. However, details about the new testing dates remain unconfirmed.
