US Treasury Blocks MEXC Over Alleged Illicit Financial Flows

The U.S. Treasury Department has taken a decisive step against the cryptocurrency exchange MEXC Global, accusing it of facilitating over $16 billion in transactions linked to sanctions evasion and other illicit activities. The action reflects increasing regulatory scrutiny of how digital assets are used to circumvent financial regulations.

On November 6, the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) issued an order that will sever MEXC’s access to the U.S. financial system. This ban is set to take effect 30 days after its publication in the Federal Register. Notably, this measure does not impose a total global ban on MEXC nor does it automatically freeze all user assets.

Link to Sanctioned Entities and Cybercrime

FinCEN’s investigations uncovered significant evidence tying MEXC to various networks that reportedly include Russia, Iran, and North Korea. The reported activities range from facilitating ransomware payments to transactions on darknet marketplaces.

Specifically, the Treasury identified nearly $1.5 billion in transactions associated with Russian sanctions evasion. This includes around $232 million in transfers directly involving entities that are sanctioned by the United States, the European Union, or the United Kingdom.

Details of the Allegations

As part of the findings, FinCEN stated that MEXC Global was involved in transacting with Russian exchange Garantex and its successor Grinex as late as June 2026. The agency further indicated that about $26 million was linked to Russia’s A7 network, with nearly $200 million in transactions utilizing the ruble-backed A7A5 stablecoin.

The report also highlighted significant Iranian-related activities, with MEXC allegedly facilitating about $1 billion in transactions with over 40 Iranian cryptocurrency exchanges from May 2021 to May 2026. Additionally, transactions benefiting Iran’s Central Bank and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were flagged, amounting to around $22 million.

Response and Future Implications

This enforcement action has drawn attention to MEXC’s alleged weaknesses in anti-money laundering protocols, contradicting the exchange’s stated policies against transactions with sanctioned jurisdictions.

The order, made under the Combating Russian Money Laundering Act, blocks U.S. financial institutions from processing transfers involving MEXC Global. Financial entities that violate this order could incur civil or criminal penalties.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that financial institutions must choose between supporting regimes like Iran’s and accessing U.S. financial markets, indicating a stringent stance on compliance going forward.

Broader Impact on the Cryptocurrency Industry

The implications of this enforcement action extend beyond MEXC, potentially affecting how other cryptocurrency exchanges operate, especially in terms of their compliance with financial regulations. Currently, MEXC is among the world’s largest crypto exchanges, reportedly processing over $1 billion in daily transactions and holding around $5 billion in reserves.

This move is part of a larger U.S. initiative to dismantle financial networks that reportedly assist sanctioned entities in using digital currencies. It underscores that regulatory oversight can reach major crypto platforms, not just individual wallets, thereby intensifying scrutiny of compliance processes in the entire industry.

The response from MEXC and other financial institutions in the upcoming weeks will be critical as the order approaches its effective date. This situation raises significant questions about future regulations and the potential push for users to turn to decentralized platforms and self-custody solutions.
