This week, significant news emerged from Moscow regarding the cryptocurrency sector, as a prominent figure associated with Blum, a crypto initiative integrated within Telegram Mini Apps, was apprehended on allegations of fraudulent activities. The individual in question, Vladimir Smerkis, previously led Binance’s operations in Russia and is now entangled in a legal battle centered around charges defined under Article 159 of the Russian Criminal Code.
Judicial Actions Confirm Detention
Reports from TASS indicate that the Zamoskvoretsky District Court issued a ruling on May 18, allowing for Smerkis’s detention due to suspicions of conducting “large-scale” fraud. Depending on the case’s progression, this could lead to a prison term ranging from two to twelve years.

Typically, initial detention suggests that investigators possess substantial evidence, although formal charges have not yet been articulated.
Initial Ventures Under Review
According to information from Mash, the investigation appears to extend to Smerkis’s earlier entrepreneurial efforts, specifically two crypto-associated companies he co-founded in 2017: The Token Fund and Tokenbox. Collectively, these initiatives allegedly resulted in investor losses amounting to approximately $15 million.
Law enforcement is now scrutinizing these losses to understand any connections that might exist concerning the current accusations. His tenure overseeing Binance in Russia garners even further scrutiny over his actions.
Suspension of Token Airdrop
The operational roadmap for Blum had included a promise for a BLUM token listing aimed at the third quarter. The unique Drop Game within the platform allows users to earn points by tapping on virtual snowflakes, which they can then exchange for tokens during the anticipated token generation event.
All activities including trading and promotions were designed to function seamlessly within Telegram Mini Apps. However, following the developments on May 18, many community members are now left uncertain about the timing of the airdrop.
Commitment to Project Continuity
A recent announcement on X has disclosed that Smerkis has officially resigned from his position as chief marketing officer, relinquishing all involvement in project operations. The team asserts that regular operations will continue uninterrupted and emphasizes their commitment to ensuring the token generation event proceeds as planned. Nevertheless, specific details concerning who will now handle marketing strategies and logistics for the airdrop remain unclear, leading to unease among users.
We would like to inform our community that Vladimir Smerkis has stepped down from his role as CMO and is no longer involved in the development of the project or in any co-founder capacity.

Future Perspectives
While the technological framework of the Telegram Mini App may be robust, trust remains a critical component in the realm of cryptocurrency. How Blum navigates the current situation, prioritizing transparency and effective governance, will ultimately determine whether it can regain its former stature or become a warning sign for similar projects operating on Telegram.
