Recently, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) granted approval for various national trust charters aimed at digital asset firms like Circle’s First National Digital Currency Bank, BitGo Bank & Trust, and others. This marks a pivotal moment in the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency regulation.

Currently, Anchorage Digital holds the distinction of being the single digital asset company that has received a national trust bank charter from the OCC among its roster of 60 institutions.

Comptroller Jonathan Gould outlined the comprehensive review undertaken for each application, emphasizing that stringent conditions must be met for operational approval. 

He also articulated how integrating new players into the banking ecosystem promotes modernization, increases diversity in services, and expands access to cutting-edge financial products.

Ripple’s Leadership and Regulatory Challenges

Brad Garlinghouse, the CEO of Ripple, took to social media to celebrate this development as a monumental step for Ripple’s stablecoin, RLUSD. He remarked that this establishes a strong benchmark for compliance across federal and state regulations.

Garlinghouse did not shy away from confronting banking lobbyists, indicating their resistance as an instance of “anti-competitive tactics” within the financial sector.

The CEO highlighted that while these lobbyists criticize the crypto space for evading regulations, the OCC’s recent actions affirm that the cryptocurrency realm operates in a transparent manner under regulatory oversight.

Stuart Alderoty, Ripple’s Chief Legal Officer, pointed out that Ripple stands as one of the pioneers to receive conditional approval post the GENIUS legislation, securing the longevity of Ripple’s stablecoin initiatives.
