This week, Utah took a bold step in the financial realm by officially integrating cryptocurrencies into its fiscal policies, acquiring $5 million in Ethereum (ETH).
Utah Joins Forces with Vanguard’s ETH ETF
Financial analyst CryptoGuru announced on the social media platform X (previously Twitter) that the acquisition took place on June 15, 2026, utilizing Vanguard’s spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund (ETF).

This pivotal decision positions Utah as a pioneer in the realm of state cryptocurrency initiatives, showcasing an increasing institutional confidence in Ethereum as a reliable hedge against economic downturns and a source of financial evolution.
The strategic move stems from legislative developments encapsulated in House Bill 45 (HB 45), known as the Utah Strategic Ethereum Reserve and Investment Act.
Approved by Governor Sarah Johnson on April 20, 2026, this bill was championed by Representative James Thompson and received widespread bipartisan support, passing in the House with a vote of 30-10 in February and the Senate with a 22-8 vote in March.
Pioneering a Path for Nevada and Colorado
CryptoGuru emphasized that the $5 million allocation constitutes only 0.0015% of Utah’s biannual budget, which amounts to approximately $325 billion.
Significantly, this investment creates a separate reserve managed autonomously by the Utah State Treasurer, thereby protecting it from standard budget reallocations.
This reserve is structured to hold Ethereum and potentially other cryptocurrencies that possess a market cap above $400 billion. Moreover, Utah residents are invited to contribute Ethereum to further strengthen this reserve.
The implementation of this purchase signifies the inaugural instance of state-managed public investment in Ethereum. CryptoGuru pointed out that states like Nevada and Colorado are looking into similar laws, although they have not yet allocated public funds into such digital asset reserves.
As of the latest update, Ethereum was trading at $2,300, reflecting a decrease of approximately 2% over the last 24 hours.
