Bitcoin Exchange Supply Hits 8-Year Lows Analysis

Recent data indicates that the Bitcoin exchange reserves have plummeted to their lowest levels in eight years. This trend has persisted over the past month, even as Bitcoin has experienced a notable recovery.

Overview of Bitcoin Supply on Exchanges

According to insights from the analytics firm Santiment, there is a discrepancy in the trends of supply on exchanges between Bitcoin and Ethereum. The supply on exchanges metric tracks the total volume of each cryptocurrency held in wallets associated with centralized exchanges.

When this metric increases, it typically shows that more investors are depositing their holdings into exchanges, often for the purpose of selling. This movement can generate bearish pressure on the asset’s price. Conversely, a decreasing supply on exchanges indicates that outflows are surpassing inflows, suggesting that investors might be accumulating their assets, which can be a bullish sign.

Below is a visual representation of the supply on exchanges for both Bitcoin and Ethereum over the past year:

The graph illustrates that the supply of Bitcoin on exchanges has seen a decline since March and has stabilized at around 5.6% of the total BTC supply presently held on exchanges. “This percentage has remained constant for the past month, marking the lowest ratio of Bitcoin on exchanges since 2018,” Santiment noted.

In contrast, Ethereum has exhibited a more volatile trend over the last year. The chart indicates that Ethereum’s supply on exchanges has sharply decreased, yet recently, this trend has reversed. Over the past ten days, Ethereum’s indicator increased from 4.2% to 4.6%. “However, it still sits close to the lowest levels recorded since Ethereum entered public trading in 2015,” the firm explained.

Notably, Bitcoin’s flat exchange supply has coincided with its recent price recovery. This suggests that despite opportunities for profit-taking, Bitcoin holders have opted not to deposit their assets for sale at this time.

The Changing Role of Exchanges

It is important to recognize that while exchanges historically played a central role in the digital asset market, recent developments, including the rise of off-chain investment options such as spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs), have shifted this landscape. Consequently, relying solely on exchange reserves offers an incomplete view of the current market dynamics.

Current Bitcoin Price

As of the latest update, Bitcoin’s price is approximately $79,400, representing a decline of 0.9% over the past week.
