Ethereum Foundation President Discusses New Mandate and Tensions

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is embarking on a pivotal transformation, guided by its President, Aya Miyaguchi. This evolution aims to streamline the Foundation’s focus in response to recent internal challenges and external pressures, moving towards a more cohesive vision.

Miyaguchi shared her perspective on the Foundation’s new direction on social media, shedding light on the complex dynamics within the organization. As the EF navigates a period of transition, it is also confronting discussions around its governance role and technical focus, amidst notable departures among its senior team.

Ethereum Foundation President Discusses New Mandate and Tensions

Redefining the Ethereum Foundation’s Role

According to Miyaguchi, the shift in mandate was initiated by the board and her proposed framework from late last year. Rather than stemming from a single conflict, Miyaguchi identified a broader structural issue: the Foundation had become a focal point for conflicting expectations.

“Technical discussions have sometimes become political or personal, influenced by underlying incentives,” she noted. “As the Foundation expanded, differing visions of its role began to pull it in multiple directions. I realized that trying to accommodate all these viewpoints would lead to stagnation.”

This observation underscores a core challenge for the Foundation. ethereum has historically depended on the EF for research, project coordination, and oversight. However, the growing sentiment is that Ethereum should not be dominated by a single entity. Miyaguchi emphasized that the Foundation’s reduced centrality is not a retreat but an indication of Ethereum’s maturation.

“We have stated clearly that EF is one of many contributors within the Ethereum ecosystem,” she wrote. “This may be difficult for some to accept, especially since the EF was the pioneering group crucial to Ethereum’s early success. Yet, it was never intended to maintain a centralized role indefinitely.”

Experience Shapes Leadership Philosophy

Miyaguchi’s extensive background in the cryptocurrency sector played a vital role in shaping her leadership approach. Since entering the industry in 2012 and contributing to the cleanup efforts following the Mt. Gox incident in 2013, she has gained a deep understanding of both innovation and potential centralization risks. Her vision as executive director has always been to facilitate Ethereum’s growth beyond the confines of the Foundation.

The EF has strategically opted to promote shared governance rather than concentrating authority. Examples of this strategy include:

  • Incubating projects like Uniswap and ENS.
  • Supporting community initiatives through ETHGlobal and hackathons.
  • Funding external projects via partnerships with organizations like Gitcoin and Moloch.

Miyaguchi emphasized a guiding principle throughout these endeavors: “How can these initiatives stand alone without our intervention?”

Current Situation and Future Outlook

Miyaguchi noted that the EF’s current holdings represent less than 0.2% of the total Ethereum supply, affirming its narrower role is intentional. The new mandate focuses on advancing Ethereum’s unique qualities and fostering user self-sovereignty through collaborative endeavors.

“We cannot achieve our goals in isolation and do not wish to,” she stated. “Our mission is to define our ‘north star’ and work with partners who share our vision.”

Interestingly, Miyaguchi contended that a more focused EF does not reduce their commitment to adoption. Instead, she argued that both individual users and large institutions rely on Ethereum’s foundational value. Adoption—especially on a greater institutional scale—remains integral to the EF’s mission, though it will be approached in ways that align with their core objectives.

Recent months have seen significant changes at the EF, with prominent figures like Carl Beekhuizen and Tim Beiko departing. This flux has raised questions about whether these transitions signify a successful decentralization or indicate internal challenges.

Miyaguchi addressed these personnel changes, acknowledging that as the EF refines its focus, the team will naturally become smaller and more specialized. She expressed confidence that new leaders are emerging to help advance the Foundation’s mission, with further updates on the organizational structure and strategy expected in the coming weeks.

Influential voices within the Ethereum community, like co-founder Vitalik Buterin, have echoed similar sentiments. In recent commentary, Buterin noted that the Foundation is still in a transformation phase and emphasized the need to prioritize the network’s long-term benefits.

As Ethereum continues to evolve, the community remains watchful. The price of ETH was noted at $1,986 at the time of reporting.
