Starknet Considers Separation from Ethereum as STRK Voting Starts

Starknet Community Votes on Potential Independence from Ethereum

The Starknet community is currently engaged in a pivotal vote regarding its future, as discussions arise about the possibility of transitioning to an independent Layer 1 blockchain. This vote is particularly significant due to concerns surrounding quantum risks and their impact on network security.

Running until October 22, STRK token holders have the opportunity to cast their votes on whether they support further exploration of this separation, wish to oppose it, or prefer to remain neutral until additional information is available. While the community’s input is sought, it’s important to note that the results of this vote are not binding.

Context of the Vote

A favorable vote outcome will not trigger an immediate separation from Ethereum. Instead, it will serve to gauge community interest in conducting a more thorough technical and economic investigation into the feasibility of establishing an independent network. Should the decision lean towards independence, the process will involve drafting new technical proposals and developing a comprehensive roadmap, followed by further governance votes.

StarkWare, the organization behind Starknet, advocates for a standalone Layer 1 network, highlighting that it could enable quicker deployment of quantum computing-resistant security measures. Currently, Starknet processes transactions within its own ecosystem while relying heavily on Ethereum for critical functions, including bridging, data access, and overall security.

The Urgency for Quantum Resistance

StarkWare’s CEO Eli Ben-Sasson emphasizes the urgency of transitioning to quantum-resistant cryptography. In June, the company introduced a three-phase roadmap designed to make Starknet fully resilient to quantum attacks by 2027. Key aspects of this plan include upgrading signature systems, migrating smart contracts, and replacing Ethereum-dependent infrastructure components.

While Ethereum developers are also pursuing post-quantum security enhancements, their initial protocol-level protections are expected to roll out in 2029. This raises an important question for the Starknet community: Should they align with Ethereum’s timeline or aim to establish their quantum-resistant solutions sooner?

As the voting period progresses, the Starknet community must weigh the implications of their decision, not only for their network’s future but also in the context of broader technological advancements and security challenges.
