Zcash Set to Enhance Transaction Speed with Upcoming NU7 Update
Zcash developers are gearing up to implement the NU7 update, targeting block number 3,543,405 for activation, which is projected to occur around November 5th. This update aims to significantly improve transaction speeds on the privacy-focused blockchain, although it is important to note that the specific block height still needs to be finalized in the project’s technical documentation and node software.
Key Features of the NU7 Update
The most notable enhancement from the NU7 update is the reduction in the block time from 75 seconds to just 25 seconds. This change is expected to approximately triple the speed at which payment transactions are processed on the Zcash network. Consequently, the time required for a ZEC deposit on exchanges, which typically waits for three confirmations, could reduce from about four minutes to roughly 75 seconds.

The update is currently undergoing testing on a dedicated network and has been in place since early October. However, as of this report, the agreed-upon activation block has yet to be integrated into the distribution specifications, making the November 5th date tentative.
Transaction Fee Adjustments
An additional modification with the NU7 update includes the temporary removal of 60% of transaction fees accrued per block from circulation. These fees are set to be reimbursed to miners starting in February 2031, a move designed to ensure the continuity of Zcash’s halving schedule for mining rewards.
Migration from Sprout to New Address Types
As part of the update, Zcash will fully deactivate its sprout privacy system. Users with assets remaining in Sprout wallets will need to migrate their holdings to the new supported address types; otherwise, those funds will become unspendable upon activation.
Implications for Users and Market Dynamics
While the update is designed to enhance functionality, it doesn’t guarantee an increase in the price of Zcash. It is imperative for users to focus on updating their node and wallet software promptly, as well as ensuring that any old Sprout balances are transferred before the update goes live.
As always, it is advisable to approach cryptocurrency-related updates and investments with caution and informed judgment.
