European Country Likely Sold Significant Bitcoin Today

In a significant development, Clifton Collins, a figure linked to illegal drug activities in Ireland, has resurfaced in the news due to a recent Bitcoin transaction involving 500 BTC, valued around $41.5 million. This transfer has raised questions about the long-forgotten cryptocurrency fortune he amassed years ago.

According to data from the analytics platform Lookonchain, the 500 BTC were moved from Collins’ wallet to Coinbase Prime. While it’s speculated that Irish authorities may have regained access to this wallet through collaboration with Europol, no official confirmation exists regarding the role of law enforcement in this particular transaction.

From Humble Beginnings to Bitcoin Fortune

The saga of Clifton Collins began in the early 2010s when he purchased Bitcoin using proceeds from illegal drug sales. Starting in 2011 and 2012, he acquired a total of 6,000 BTC at around $5 each, a total investment of approximately $30,000.

In 2016, Collins took steps to safeguard his assets by distributing his Bitcoin holdings across 12 different wallets. He documented the private keys for these wallets on paper and concealed them in a fishing tackle box within his rented house.

However, Collins’ fortunes turned in 2017 when he was arrested for drug trafficking and received a five-year prison sentence. Following his incarceration, a bag containing his private keys reportedly went missing during a cleaning of his apartment.

In 2020, an Irish court ordered the confiscation of Collins’ 6,000 BTC as criminal proceeds. Yet, due to the inaccessible private keys, these assets, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, could not be transferred.

Recent Recoveries and Future Access

The Irish Criminal Proceeds Bureau (CAB), assisted by the European Cybercrime Centre, succeeded in accessing one of Collins’ wallets in March 2026, leading to the recovery of 500 BTC. Follow-up operations in May and July resulted in the retrieval of an additional 1,000 BTC. In August, another 500 BTC were transferred from wallets associated with Collins.

To date, 2,500 BTC have been moved from this series of wallets throughout 2026, amounting to approximately $207.5 million. Notably, this indicates that around 3,500 BTC of Collins’ original stash may still be unaccounted for, currently valued at about $290 million.

While details remain murky regarding how authorities cracked the access codes and obtained the missing private keys, Europol has previously stated that it provided advanced technical support and resources for decryption.
