Binance and Binance TR Update on Hack Incident and Withdrawals

A significant cyberattack on Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally, has rattled the industry, resulting in an estimated loss of about $6.3 billion. The attack occurred recently, leading to immediate measures by the exchange to enhance security amid ongoing investigations.

Initial reports suggest the breach may have originated from a compromised laptop of a DevOps engineer. However, subsequent updates indicated that further vulnerabilities were identified, making this incident a complex attack. Binance is currently collaborating with law enforcement agencies as they delve deeper into the matter.

“We are still gathering facts and will share more directly as we receive them,” a Binance spokesperson stated.

In response to the hack, Binance confirmed that approximately $3 billion worth of assets have been frozen in cooperation with blockchain partners. The exchange reassured users that all potential losses would be mitigated through the company’s Security Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and its institutional resources, emphasizing that customer assets remain secure.

Suspension of Withdrawals

As part of immediate security measures, Binance temporarily halted all withdrawal operations. While deposits continue without interruption, the exchange anticipates resuming withdrawals within the next 48 hours as they enhance their security infrastructure and verify addresses.

A detailed report outlining the technical aspects of this security incident will be released once the investigation concludes.

Statement from Binance Turkey

Binance TR, the Turkish branch of the exchange, also addressed the situation, affirming the security of user assets. They temporarily suspended crypto asset withdrawals as a safety precaution while asserting that trading and Turkish Lira transactions remain operational.

In their communication, Binance TR emphasized: “Our priority is the security of our users. All user assets on Binance TR are secure, and we are actively working on the necessary measures to ensure a thorough and safe resolution.”

The information surrounding this cyberattack highlights the ongoing challenges within the cryptocurrency market, urging platforms to bolster their security protocols as attacks become increasingly sophisticated.
