A recently emerging cyber threat, known as the DarkSword attack tool, is raising alarm bells among cryptocurrency investors. This malicious software specifically targets vulnerabilities in Apple’s iOS operating system, leading to significant asset thefts. Reports indicate that attackers have stolen approximately $5.57 million in cryptocurrency from user wallets, primarily through malicious websites.
DarkSword operates by exploiting security flaws in iPhones, allowing hackers to hijack devices simply by prompting users to visit a compromised website using Safari. Once access is gained, attackers can retrieve sensitive information including passwords, messages, and photos, along with critical data necessary for cryptocurrency transactions.

The Threat: Exposed Wallet Information
The most critical vulnerability lies in the theft of private keys and recovery phrases associated with cryptocurrency wallets. When attackers obtain these credentials, they can transfer users’ digital assets to their own accounts, jeopardizing financial security.
Market Concerns: Source Code for Sale
New information suggests that the source code for DarkSword is being listed for sale on illicit online platforms for a staggering $30,000. The code is reportedly effective against the latest iOS version, 18.6.2, although researchers have discovered snippets that hint at compatibility adjustments for upcoming iOS versions, 26 and 27. However, it remains unclear if the current tool could effectively exploit those newer systems.
Attempts to enhance the DarkSword tool using artificial intelligence have not yielded significant success, as most adaptations have proven ineffective against modern iOS versions. Nonetheless, cybersecurity assessments by Google confirm that DarkSword exploits six identified vulnerabilities, all of which Apple has addressed in recent security patches.
Future Risks: The Potential for New Attacks
Experts warn that the threat may continue if new vulnerabilities are discovered, allowing attackers to repurpose existing DarkSword code against contemporary iPhone models. Recent developments have also introduced features targeting the imToken cryptocurrency wallet, further widening the attack landscape.
Widespread Impact: Millions at Risk
Researchers highlight a concerning statistic: the malwares’ distribution networks are connected to websites that collectively attract around 135 million visitors each month. This raises fears that a new exploit targeting current iOS systems could lead to an expanded attack vector affecting a broader range of users.
To mitigate risks, security experts strongly advise cryptocurrency investors to ensure their iPhones are updated to the most recent iOS version. They also recommend avoiding the storage of recovery phrases in insecure locations, such as photo galleries or note-taking applications.
