Cryptocurrency Benefits in Investment Portfolios
A recent study by 21Shares highlights the potential benefits of including cryptocurrencies in investment portfolios. The research indicates that allocating between 2% to 5% of a portfolio to assets like Bitcoin and altcoins could enhance risk-adjusted returns significantly.
Findings on Portfolio Allocation
The report focused on the impact of integrating cryptocurrencies into a traditional 60/40 investment strategy, which typically consists of 60% stocks and 40% bonds. Covering the period from october 2023 to September 2026, the study found that Bitcoin demonstrates a 38% correlation with US equities and just a 4% correlation with gold. This suggests that Bitcoin can serve as a diversifying asset, differing greatly from conventional investment options.

Notably, since the introduction of spot ETFs in January 2024, Bitcoin’s three-month moving average volatility has stabilized at 38%. In contrast, major US growth stocks such as Tesla and Palantir have experienced higher volatility, at 46% and 59%, respectively. This trend indicates that Bitcoin’s volatility may be aligning more closely with standard market behavior.
Comparative Analysis of Investment Models
In assessing various portfolio configurations, 21Shares examined three models: a traditional allocation with 2% Bitcoin, a balanced model featuring 3% Bitcoin and 1% Ethereum, and a growth model consisting of 3% Bitcoin, 1.5% Ethereum, and 0.5% Solana. Results indicate that all variants, which reduced equity exposure in favor of cryptocurrencies, outperformed the standard 60/40 model.
The traditional 60/40 portfolio yielded an annualized return of 10.86% with a Sharpe ratio of 0.57. In comparison, the portfolios that included cryptocurrencies demonstrated annual returns of 11.64%, 13%, and an impressive 17%, with Sharpe ratios ranging from 0.64 to 0.74.
Investment Recommendations
21Shares advocates for classifying bitcoin as an alternative asset akin to gold, while positioning Ethereum and Solana as approaches to technology-driven growth investments. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of quarterly rebalancing to uphold portfolio weights, manage downside risks, and mitigate increased exposure during market volatility.
