October, often viewed as a potential turning point for cryptocurrencies, has concluded with disappointing results for many investors. Bitcoin, which enthusiasts had hoped would experience a price rally during this month—dubbed “Uptober”—saw a drop of around 7%. While this decline may seem significant, analysts from Santiment have provided insights that suggest a more nuanced picture.
Challenges and Retained Profitability
According to Santiment, the anticipated surge in the cryptocurrency market did not materialize as expected. The company noted that, following a promising recovery in August and September, Bitcoin struggled throughout October. Despite this fact, investors reportedly held on to their profitable positions, with many still realizing significant gains despite the drop.

The firm highlighted that, although Bitcoin had closed lower, investors collectively profited by approximately $7.86 billion during the month.
Whale Accumulation Remains Strong
A distinct trend emerged among larger investors, with so-called ‘whale wallets’—those holding between 10 and 10,000 BTC—accumulating about 91,500 BTC from September 18 to October 31. This accumulation brings their total holdings to 13.69 million BTC, comprising 68.1% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply. Santiment noted that while this accumulation reflects activity from exchanges and custodians, it does not exclusively represent purchases made by individual investors.
The Impact of the Binance Hack
October also witnessed a severe setback for the cryptocurrency community following a major cyberattack on Binance, which resulted in the theft of $6.3 billion in assets. This incident not only marked the largest hack in crypto history but also significantly affected Bitcoin’s valuation, leading it to dip below $80,000 and settle at around $76,500. Following this news, discussions around the hack skyrocketed, with mentions nearly doubling those seen during a prior attack on Bybit.
Diverse Outcomes for Bitcoin and Ethereum
While Bitcoin investors had a mixed but profitable month, Ethereum faced a challenging period. Santiment reported that Ethereum investors incurred a net loss of around $510 million in October, with the overwhelming majority of days in the latter half of the month resulting in losses. This divergence in financial outcomes illustrates the varying fortunes within the cryptocurrency market.
As the crypto landscape shifts, the final days of October revealed a mix of volatility and resilience within Bitcoin, contrasting sharply with the struggles faced by Ethereum investors. The challenges brought forth by major security breaches serve as a reminder of the ongoing risks in the crypto ecosystem.
