Multicoin Capital Doubles Down on Cryptocurrency Amid AI Shift
Multicoin Capital, a prominent player in the cryptocurrency investment landscape, has reaffirmed its commitment to digital assets, opting not to follow competitors that are increasingly diverting their focus toward the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. This decision comes amidst a broader trend where firms like Paradigm and Framework Ventures have begun exploring opportunities within AI and robotics.
Strategic Focus on Hyberliquid
The firm has identified Hyperliquid’s native token, HYPE, as its largest investment within its hedge fund portfolio. Spencer Applebaum, a general partner and co-head of the venture capital arm at Multicoin, confirmed this prioritization during a recent Bloomberg interview. Although the precise amount invested in HYPE was not disclosed, Applebaum noted that these tokens were acquired from the public market.

Market Position and Investment Philosophy
Managing roughly $2.7 billion in assets, Multicoin Capital believes its specialized knowledge in cryptocurrencies provides it with a significant competitive edge. Applebaum expressed confidence in the firm’s ability to seize opportunities within the crypto sphere, stating, “We believe we have a competitive advantage in the cryptocurrency sector and we want to stick with it.”
Investment Trends in the Cryptocurrency Sector
While many notable investment firms are branching out into AI, Multicoin intends to maintain its dedicated focus on cryptocurrency. The company’s last venture capital fund raised in 2022 took longer than anticipated to invest but does not exclusively target AI ventures. In contrast, Paradigm has launched a new $1.2 billion fund aimed specifically at AI and robotics.
According to data from Galaxy Research, investment in the cryptocurrency sector is projected to reach approximately $20 billion by 2025, reflecting a robust growth trajectory. In the first half of 2026 alone, the sector secured $10 billion in investments, underscoring continuing interest and capital flow in cryptocurrencies despite market shifts.
