New Token Issuance for Altcoin Set to Decrease by 36 Percent

NEAR Protocol Votes to Reduce Token Issuance Rate

A recent governance vote within the NEAR Protocol has successfully passed a proposal to lower the issuance of new tokens. This vote concluded today, with the proposal, identified as HSP-029, now entering a period where the Security Council can consider a potential veto.

According to the official governance page, the results showed approximately 3.29 million in favor of the proposal, with no opposing votes recorded. The veto period is set to last until November 16th, giving stakeholders time to assess the changes.

Details of the Proposal

The main objective of the approved proposal is to decrease the annual maximum rate of new token production from 2.5% to 1.6%. This adjustment translates to a substantial 36% reduction in the rate of new tokens being generated. Importantly, this change will be implemented gradually over a 24-month period rather than in a single step.

Market analysts estimate that maintaining the current production level could result in the issuance of approximately 11.8 million fewer NEAR tokens over a two-year span and around 66.1 million fewer over six years. This decreased production is also expected to impact staking rewards, with projected annual returns dropping from 5.27% to approximately 3.37%, based on consistent staking participation.

Next Steps for Implementation

Before the proposal can take effect, it will need to complete the veto process and also require validators to approve the protocol update. Following final approval, there is a planned 90-day preparation period prior to the initial rollout of the update.

As the crypto community watches these developments, the changes to the NEAR Protocol could significantly influence its market dynamics and staking ecosystem moving forward.
