Donald Trump Discusses Binance Hack Again

U.S. President Donald Trump addressed the media concerning North Korea’s potential involvement in a significant cyberattack on the cryptocurrency exchange Binance, which resulted in a theft of approximately $6.3 billion. Trump’s comments followed a report by the FBI confirming that North Korea was linked to the breach.

During a Halloween event at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on October 31, Trump stated, “We’re learning about the incident. I’m not worried. We don’t know if it’s North Korea, but if it is, we’ll discuss it with North Korea.” His remarks came in response to questions regarding the FBI’s accusations against North Korean hackers.

FBI’s Accusations and Impact

The FBI officially announced on the same day that the attack on Binance, which occurred on October 29, was executed by a hacker group identified as TraderTraitor, believed to have ties to North Korea. The agency detailed that the stolen assets were primarily converted into Ethereum (ETH) and possibly laundered through decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms.

In light of the breach, the U.S. Secret Service and the IRS’s Criminal Investigations Unit have urged cryptocurrency firms to block transactions associated with the wallets linked to the attackers. This proactive measure aims to mitigate the impact of the stolen funds.

Binance’s Response and Recovery Efforts

In response to the cyberattack, binance has initiated a recovery plan to compensate affected users. As of November 1, the exchange announced that it successfully replaced 95% of the stolen cryptocurrency assets using its own resources. Moreover, Binance confirmed that all reserves were intact for major cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), BNB, Solana (SOL), XRP, and various stablecoins.

The exchange plans to gradually resume withdrawals, which had been temporarily halted, and will enhance security measures across its platforms as checks are completed.
