Bitcoin Decline Analysis: CEO Outlines Key Levels and Developments

Bitcoin, the foremost cryptocurrency, is facing increased selling pressure after a period of relative stability. Its price has recently plummeted to approximately $82,000 due to various market factors, including recent activities in U.S. government wallets and rising oil prices above $100 per barrel, which have negatively impacted global risk appetite.

This shift has led to heightened concerns among investors regarding the sustainability of Bitcoin’s price. Analysts are now focused on critical support levels that could dictate the future trajectory of this digital asset.

Bitcoin Decline Analysis: CEO Outlines Key Levels and Developments

Key Support Zones Under Scrutiny

Joao Wedson, the CEO of analytics platform Alphractal, examined the average purchase costs for institutional investors in Bitcoin. With holdings by U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs and publicly traded companies totaling 2.57 million BTC, many of these investments were made near the $77,000-$79,000 range. Maintaining this price level is crucial for these investors to remain profitable.

The breakdown of these holdings includes:

  • U.S. spot ETFs: 1.29 million BTC, average cost of $76,909
  • Publicly traded companies: 1.28 million BTC, average cost of $78,834

Combined, these holdings account for nearly 13% of Bitcoin’s total supply, purchased close to the same price point.

Potential for Profit Amidst Decline

At a price of about $83,200, the MVRV (Market Value to Realized Value) ratio for ETF investors stood at 1.08x, indicating unrealized profits of approximately $8.1 billion. Conversely, publicly traded companies had an MVRV ratio of 1.06x and unrealized profits of around $5.6 billion. However, if the price dips below $83,000, it poses concerns for various investors since average costs are significantly higher, ranging from $33,789 for private companies to $81,277 for the ishares bitcoin trust.

Historical Context of Price Drops

Wedson pointed out that in a previous instance when Bitcoin dropped to $58,500, there was a 24% decline in the average position of ETF investors. Nevertheless, this situation did not trigger mass capitulation, suggesting that holding above the $77,000-$79,000 support zone could limit selling pressure moving forward. Conversely, falling below this range could turn many institutional positions into losses, further driving market panic.
