Brazil’s state-owned energy firm, Petrobras, is spearheading two innovative projects based on the Cardano blockchain aimed at enhancing the tracking of environmental data associated with low-carbon fuels. This initiative was publicly detailed by the Cardano Foundation and marks a significant step for the company in its sustainability efforts.
Projects Focused on Sustainable Fuels
The first project targets sustainable aviation fuel, which is intended to streamline the ownership of emission reduction rights. Utilizing a model known as “book-and-claim,” this system allows airlines to purchase environmental benefits from sustainable fuel, even if the fuel is utilized on a different flight. This requires meticulous documentation of the original rights holder, the recipient of the benefits, and the timeline of the usage.

Petrobras plans to create standardized tokens on the Cardano network that represent the unique characteristics of each type of sustainable aviation fuel. These tokens can be transferred and, when the associated environmental benefit is realized, they can be permanently retired from the active ledger. This process aims to eliminate the possibility of duplicating claims on the same emission reductions.
Further empowering its users, the system will allow passengers to input their flight details—departure and arrival airports—to calculate the environmental advantages linked to their flights. Subsequently, travelers will obtain a verifiable document connected to the fuel source certificate.
Diesel R Initiatives
The second initiative focuses on Diesel R, an advanced fuel comprised of partially renewable raw materials, including various fats derived from plants and animals. The initiative aims to monitor data over the entire lifecycle of the fuel—from production and transportation through to usage—documenting it on the Cardano blockchain. This thorough accounting can support companies in effectively reporting indirect emissions originating from their supply chains.
Current Status and Future Prospects
Both projects are presently in the research and development phase, and no timeline for large-scale implementation has been disclosed. Neither Petrobras nor the Cardano Foundation has provided insights into the volumes of fuel being tracked or whether these projects will influence the usage of Cardano’s ADA cryptocurrency.
This pioneering collaboration demonstrates how blockchain technology can play a crucial role in the energy sector’s transition towards sustainability. As global scrutiny on emissions intensifies, such innovations may prove essential in shaping future practices in the industry.
