Crypto Attacks Lead to $1.18 Billion Loss in Three Months

Crypto Sector Faces Major Setbacks: $1.18 Billion Lost in Q3 2026

The cryptocurrency industry suffered significant losses in the third quarter of 2026, with reported attacks totaling approximately $1.18 billion. According to cybersecurity firm Hacken, a total of 107 security incidents were documented between July and September of this year.

Key Findings from the Hacken Report

A striking 77% of the financial losses, amounting to $906 million, were attributed to vulnerabilities within external infrastructure. This includes compromised suppliers, insufficiently implemented security measures, and areas not covered by conventional smart contract audits.

Major Incidents Driving Losses

The report highlighted that the four largest security breaches accounted for about 80% of total losses. Notably:

  • The Bitget attack resulted in losses of approximately $387 million.
  • The Liquid Network incident cost about $320 million.
  • Tectonic’s breach led to losses around $120 million.
  • A vulnerability in Coldcard firmware incurred losses of about $115 million.

Frequent but Less Costly Attacks

While smart contract attacks may not represent the highest financial losses, they were the most common, with 71 incidents recorded, resulting in losses totaling around $228 million. Among the 107 incidents reported, 98 involved losses of less than $10 million, with a median loss of $670,000.

Recovery Efforts and Ongoing Challenges

Of the $1.18 billion lost, around $387 million has been recovered or reversed. In the Liquid Network breach, individuals identifying as white-hat traders returned $272 million. Similarly, in the Tectonic case, roughly $111.2 million was recovered after Cronos validators accessed the blockchain history.

Additionally, platform operators compensated users by covering $410 million from their own resources. Despite these recovery efforts, about $384 million remains unrecovered or uncompensated by companies involved.

This massive financial toll underscores the ongoing vulnerabilities within the cryptocurrency sector and the urgent need for improved security measures. Stakeholders are encouraged to reassess their security protocols to mitigate future risks.
