Crypto PACs Influence Political Landscape in Texas Runoffs

The Texas political landscape is witnessing considerable activity as the state gears up for the upcoming election cycle. Recent reports indicate that betting on the Texas Republican Senate primary runoff has surpassed $16 million on prediction markets like Kalshi. This platform has assigned crypto-backed candidate Ken Paxton a 96% probability of defeating incumbent John Cornyn before the voting takes place.

Moreover, Kalshi has consistently indicated a strong position for various Democratic candidates in related House races, notably Christian Menefee, whose odds have remained stable since February.

Crypto PACs Influence Political Landscape in Texas Runoffs

Two key Political Action Committees (PACs) associated with the cryptocurrency sector have contributed millions to advertising efforts aimed at influencing results in both races.

The Implications of Advertising Spend

On a recent Tuesday, Texas citizens participated in two key runoff elections — one statewide and the other in the 18th congressional district near Houston. Ken Paxton and John Cornyn faced off in the Republican race for the U.S. Senate seat. Meanwhile, Democrats saw a contest between Green and Menefee to determine the candidate for November’s general election. The outcomes are significant, as they could potentially impact the power dynamics within Congress when the new session commences in 2027.

The PAC known as Protect Progress, which is linked to the Ripple and Coinbase-affiliated Fairshake PAC, reported an expenditure of $5 million in support of Menefee and an additional $2.8 million targeting Green, labeling him as “actively hostile” to digital currencies.

Additionally, Menefee received backing from the Blockchain Leadership Fund, supported by firms like Anchorage Digital. However, this PAC had not disclosed any expenditures before the election.

Advertising Tactics and Their Focus

Interestingly, not all advertisement campaigns were centered on cryptocurrency themes. For example, one commercial funded by Protect Progress attacked Green for his stance against former President Donald Trump, completely omitting the cryptocurrency discussion.

A local commentator noted that up to 12 separate television ads aired in a single day, all funded by the Protect Progress PAC. It was highlighted that the financial backers of these ads are often aligned with Trump’s core supporters.

In the Senate race, a different PAC, the Fellowship PAC—backed by Wall Street’s Cantor Fitzgerald and Anchorage—reported spending $500,000 in support of Paxton. This expenditure came shortly after Trump publicly endorsed Paxton and criticized Cornyn’s perceived hesitance in supporting him as a presidential candidate.

Insights from Prediction Markets

According to prediction markets, Kalshi assigned Menefee a 91% chance of winning the Democratic House primary, with rival platform Polymarket showing similar probabilities for the competing candidates across their races.

Under the current Republican majority in Congress, several cryptocurrency-friendly legislations have already been enacted, such as the GENIUS Act related to stablecoins. This creates a vested interest for the cryptocurrency sector in the outcomes of these races, as control of Congress may greatly influence future regulatory frameworks.
