BitMine Plans to Halt ethereum purchases After Target is Met
BitMine, recognized as the world’s largest holder of Ethereum (ETH), has announced a significant shift in its purchasing strategy. At the recent Token2049 event in Singapore, Chairman Tom Lee revealed that the company intends to stop acquiring ETH once it hits its target of 5% of the total supply, which equates to approximately 6 million ETH.

Recent Purchases Bring Holdings Closer to Target
Currently, BitMine holds 6,016,414 ETH, accounting for 4.9% of the total 122.1 million ETH supply. To achieve its objective, Lee indicated that the company needs to acquire about 100,000 more ETH, stating that this milestone could potentially be reached within six weeks if the current purchasing pace continues.
Since initiating its ETH treasury strategy in June 2025, BitMine has been purchasing Ethereum on a weekly basis. This consistent investment has helped stabilize demand in the marketplace, particularly during a bearish phase in the cryptocurrency market.
Strategic Shift Post Target Achievement
Tom Lee emphasized that the company’s buying strategy was designed to mitigate risks during market downturns. However, as the market shows significant recovery—with ETH experiencing a substantial uptick—BitMine plans to pivot its focus. Instead of acquiring more ETH, Lee stated that after reaching the 5% target, the company’s strategy will shift to income generation through staking their ETH holdings and initiating share buybacks.
“By purchasing during a bear market, we shielded ourselves from declines in ETH,” Lee explained. “Now, with the expectation of a possible 25x growth, the stockpiling phase will come to an end.”
Market Implications
Lee’s announcement has sparked discussions among analysts regarding potential impacts on the Ethereum market. With BitMine poised to become less active in purchasing ETH, some experts suggest the absence of such a significant buyer could lead to changes in market dynamics.
As BitMine approaches its purchasing goal, the cryptocurrency community will be watching closely to see how this strategic change affects both BitMine’s operations and the broader ETH market.
