US Imposes Sanctions on Major Cryptocurrency Exchange

U.S. Imposes Serious Sanctions on Cryptocurrency Exchange MEXC Global

The U.S. Treasury Department has announced significant sanctions against cryptocurrency exchange MEXC Global, blocking its access to the U.S. financial system. The action is based on findings that the exchange facilitated transactions amounting to at least $16 billion in illicit activities aimed at evading sanctions against countries like Iran, North Korea, and Russia.

These measures were outlined by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) and are part of Operation Economic Outcast, which is focused on diminishing the role of cryptocurrency in facilitating illegal financial activities. As a result, U.S. financial institutions are now prohibited from processing any transactions associated with MEXC Global.

Allegations of Sanctions Evasion

According to officials, serious shortcomings in MEXC Global’s compliance with anti-money laundering regulations permitted sanctioned individuals and entities to leverage the platform for illegal activities. Reports indicate that the exchange processed roughly $1 billion in transactions directly with over 40 Iranian cryptocurrency firms over a five-year span. Notably, MEXC Global is accused of facilitating approximately $22 million in transactions connected to the Central Bank of Iran and organizations such as the Iranian Revolutionary Guard and the Quds Force.

Russian-related transactions also featured prominently in the investigation, with findings suggesting that MEXC Global executed around $1.5 billion in transactions aimed at circumventing sanctions against Russia. This total includes $232 million directly linked to sanctioned entities.

The exchange reportedly intends to maintain operational ties with Garantex and its successor Grinex—both of which are on the U.S. sanctions list—until June 2026.

Consequences for U.S. Financial Institutions

In addition to blocking MEXC Global, the sanctions entail strict legal repercussions for any U.S. financial institutions that fail to comply with the new regulations. Violating the sanctions could lead to significant legal or criminal penalties. The exemption comes with a 30-day period for organizations to adjust before the regulations take full effect, as published in the U.S. Federal Register.

MEXC Global, launched in 2018, had projected a daily trading volume exceeding $1 billion and approximately $5 billion in reserves by September 2026. The platform supports trading in more than 3,000 cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets, and it now faces a critical setback due to these sanctions.

The U.S. Treasury Secretary has emphasized that financial institutions cannot support regimes that infringe on U.S. sanctions while benefiting from access to the U.S. financial system. The recent sanctions reflect an ongoing commitment to combat the use of digital assets to evade legal and regulatory measures.
