Zcash has successfully implemented the NU7 network upgrade, aimed at enhancing transaction efficiency and capacity. This upgrade, activated on November 6, 2023, allows for significantly faster transaction confirmations and adjusts the blockchain’s fee structure.
The NU7 upgrade went live at block 3,543,405 around 02:34 UTC. One of its critical features is the reduction of the block production time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. This change is designed to make private transactions more practical for a range of activities, including everyday payments and cross-chain transfers.

“NU7 has successfully activated on mainnet. A new era of Zcash is here,” Zcash announced on social media.
With the new system, users can expect their first transaction confirmation to occur approximately three times faster once block production stabilizes. For instance, exchanges that require three confirmations may reduce their waiting time from nearly four minutes to just 75 seconds.
NU7 Brings Significant Changes in Transaction Processing
The most notable change introduced by NU7 is the enhanced transaction interval. Previously, Zcash aimed to create a new block every 75 seconds; now, this interval is cut to 25 seconds. This allows for a higher processing capacity for private payments, with the potential increase in throughput for simple Orchard shielded transactions from around 2.9 to 6.6 transactions per second.
The upgrade also imposes limits on transaction activities within individual blocks, aimed at preventing wallet overloads while scanning the blockchain for incoming payments. This change could lower the daily download requirements for light wallets from 271 MB to approximately 169 MB.
However, the quicker block production timeframe also presents technical hurdles, particularly for miners. The reduced time frame could lead to an increase in discarded blocks, as miners will have less time for validation. Testing indicated a discarded block rate of 3.43% compared to 1.57% prior to the upgrade.
Fee Structure and Legacy System Changes
In addition to transaction speeds, NU7 revamps Zcash’s economic model. Under the new regime, miners will receive 40% of transaction fees, while the remainder will be placed into a reserve that is expected to aid future mining rewards. This reserve mechanism is projected to begin distributing funds around February 2031, addressing concerns about diminishing mining rewards.
Another significant alteration involves the retirement of Zcash’s original privacy pool, Sprout, which was introduced in 2016. The upgrade disables transactions from the legacy version 4, effectively rendering approximately 12,224 ZEC from Sprout unspendable. While discussions regarding potential recovery mechanisms have taken place, no solution had been finalized by the time of activation.
Future Implications for Zcash Post-NU7
The NU7 upgrade marks a fundamental shift for the Zcash network, although its effects on market performance remain uncertain. Investors are keenly observing whether the enhanced transaction speeds and privacy improvements will lead to increased activity and interest in the cryptocurrency.
For now, the key focus will be on how effectively wallets, exchanges, miners, and node operators adapt to the revised consensus rules. Will the NU7 upgrade help Zcash strengthen its stance in the competitive landscape of privacy-focused cryptocurrencies? Only time will reveal whether these innovations draw in new users and institutional interest.
